T. Higdon Studio is the Lexington, Kentucky studio of Tony Higdon, an award-winning sculptor who has spent the last several years applying three decades of metalworking and sculpting mastery to the art of the handmade hat. A Lexington native, Tony is best known for his large-scale metal and mixed-media sculptures, but after an accident sent him searching for new creative territory, he discovered felt and fell into hat making with the same intensity he brings to every medium.

Each hat begins with high-quality beaver-fur felt, shaped over antique wooden hat blocks that have been forming hats for over a century. Tony then adorns each piece with his own handmade embellishments — forged copper rivets, leather, feathers, vintage fabric, and personal objects commissioned by the wearer. He has incorporated family heirlooms such as grandfather’s rings and hand-etched wedding dates, making each hat as much a personal story as a wearable object. His work has been worn by musicians including members of Town Mountain and Tyler Childers’ band.
