About

Happy Spooning is a Lexington, Kentucky woodworking studio where David "Big Chill" Napier hand-carves heirloom-quality wooden spoons and kitchen utensils from trees sustainably harvested and locally sourced in Appalachia. Each piece is carved to order, finished with organic tung oil and food-grade citrus solvent, and no two ever come out exactly alike — a deliberate feature of David's craft.

An avid musician as well as a woodworker, David picked up spoon carving during the pandemic and quickly discovered a deep connection between the meditative work of carving and the community around him. That bond became literal when he was commissioned by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to carve nearly 300 worry spoons — small, smooth pieces meant to provide comfort in difficult moments, in the tradition of worry stones.

Happy Spooning products are available at Kentucky craft markets including Crafted Social, and online at happyspooning.com.
