Designer Baskets by Derek is the studio of Derek Downing, a Lexington, Kentucky basketmaker who has been crafting signature hand-woven baskets since high school — more than 35 years of work that sits at the intersection of traditional Kentucky craft and contemporary design. Derek learned basketry from his mother and carries that generational tradition forward in each signed and dated piece he creates.

His baskets are made from an unusual and aromatic combination of grapevine handles, hand-dyed rattan, and sea grass, rooted in the classic egg-basket form but updated with vibrant color, contemporary proportion, and Derek’s own instinctive creative flow — no patterns, no measurements, just hands and materials finding their shape. He was juried into the Kentucky Craft Marketing Program at 16, one of the youngest ever to earn that distinction, and his work has since been carried in craft galleries and fine retailers nationwide, including a featured appearance on QVC.

Derek is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen. His baskets are available at basketsbyderek.com, on Etsy, and at Kentucky craft markets.
